# Fireworks AI

> Give Fireworks-hosted models a web search tool backed by TinyFish Search

## Overview

[Fireworks AI](https://fireworks.ai) hosts open models such as DeepSeek, Kimi, GLM, and Qwen behind an OpenAI-compatible API. This guide gives a Fireworks model a `search` tool backed by the [TinyFish Search API](https://docs.tinyfish.ai/search-api/index.md), so it can answer questions about current events and cite its sources.

The example is a single file, in Python or TypeScript.

## How It Works

**1. Send the question with a tool definition**

Your code sends the question to a Fireworks model through its chat completions API, with a `search` tool definition.

**2. The model calls the tool**

The model returns a tool call with a search `query` and a `purpose`, plus an optional `domain_type`.

**3. Your code runs TinyFish Search**

Your code sends those arguments to `GET https://api.search.tinyfish.ai`.

**4. Return the results**

The top five results go back to the model as a `tool` message.

**5. The model answers**

The model writes an answer with its sources linked inline. The example caps the loop at five model calls.

## Before You Start

**1. Get your API keys**

Create a Fireworks key at [app.fireworks.ai/settings/users/api-keys](https://app.fireworks.ai/settings/users/api-keys) and a TinyFish key at [agent.tinyfish.ai/api-keys](https://agent.tinyfish.ai/api-keys). Store both in your environment:

```bash theme={null}
export FIREWORKS_API_KEY="your_fireworks_api_key"
export TINYFISH_API_KEY="your_tinyfish_api_key"
```

**2. Install dependencies**

You need Python 3.10+ or Node.js 22.18+.

```bash Python theme={null}
pip install openai requests
```

```bash TypeScript theme={null}
npm install openai
```

The TypeScript example uses top-level `await`, so set `"type": "module"` in your `package.json`.

## Build the Tool

Save this as `main.py` or `main.ts`:

```python main.py theme={null}
import json
import os
import sys
from datetime import date
import requests
from openai import OpenAI
    if not os.environ.get(key):
        sys.exit(f"{key} is not set.")
## What Each Search Looks Like
The model calls `search` with arguments like these:
```json theme={null}
{
  "query": "Formula 1 2026 season latest race results",
  "purpose": "Confirm most recent F1 race and winner"
}
```
Your code returns the top five TinyFish Search results as the tool result (two shown here):
```json theme={null}
{
  "query": "Formula 1 2026 season latest race results",
  "results": [
    {
      "position": 1,
      "site_name": "www.formula1.com",
      "snippet": "Subscribe 2026 RACE RESULTS. Australia 08 Mar George RussellRUS Mercedes 58 1:23:06.801 China 15 Mar Kimi AntonelliANT Mercedes 56 1:33:15.607 Miami 03 May",
      "title": "2026 RACE RESULTS",
      "url": "https://www.formula1.com/en/results/2026/races"
    },
    {
      "position": 2,
      "site_name": "en.wikipedia.org",
      "snippet": "The 2026 FIA Formula One World Championship is a motor racing championship for Formula One cars and the 77th running of the Formula One World Championship.",
      "title": "2026 Formula One World Championship",
      "url": "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2026_Formula_One_World_Championship"
    }
  ]
}
```
With `domain_type: "news"`, each result also includes `publisher` and `date`.
## Run It
```bash Python theme={null}
python main.py "Who won the most recent Formula 1 race and when was it?"
```
```bash TypeScript theme={null}
node main.ts "Who won the most recent Formula 1 race and when was it?"
```
Each search is logged to stderr, and the answer prints to stdout:
```text theme={null}
→ search({'query': 'F1 Mexico City Grand Prix 2026 race winner', 'purpose': 'Find the winner of the most recent Formula 1 race (late October 2026)', 'domain_type': 'news'})
→ search({'query': 'Formula 1 2026 season latest race results', 'purpose': 'Confirm most recent F1 race and winner'})
**Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes)** won the most recent Formula 1 race — the **United States Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas, on Sunday 25 October 2026** (Round 18 of the 2026 season). Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) was second and Max Verstappen (Red Bull) third ([ESPN results](https://www.espn.com/f1/story/_/id/49535228/formula-1-2026-results-kimi-antonelli-lewis-hamilton-george-russell-winners-podium-final-positions-every-race), [Formula 1](https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/article/it-was-the-result-we-needed-antonelli-hoping-to-win-title-very-soon-after-perfect-us-gp.3pukItI57EWP9AtzrExMek)).

```
## Key Choices
| Choice | Value | Why |
| - | - | - |
| **Model** | `accounts/fireworks/models/deepseek-v4p1-flash-1017` | DeepSeek V4.1 Flash. Override with the `FIREWORKS_MODEL` environment variable. |
| **Tool definition** | `search`, with `query`, `purpose`, `domain_type` | Adapted from the [TinyFish MCP server](https://docs.tinyfish.ai/mcp-integration/index.md). The model is told to always pass `purpose`, which improves ranking. |
| **Results** | Top 5, as returned by the API | Keeps the model's context small while keeping `date` and, for news, `publisher`. |
| **System prompt** | Today's date, untrusted-content rule, inline citations | The date lets the model search for the right year and judge freshness. |
| **Temperature** | `0.1` | Fireworks recommends 0.0–0.3 for tool calling. |
| **Loop cap** | 5 model calls | The last call sets `tool_choice: "none"` and tells the model to answer, so it always does. |
## Tips
* **Pick a model that supports function calling.** Any of them work. List them with:
  ```bash theme={null}
  curl -s https://api.fireworks.ai/inference/v1/models \
    -H "Authorization: Bearer $FIREWORKS_API_KEY" \
    | jq -r '.data[] | select(.supports_tools) | .id'
  ```
* **Append the assistant message unchanged.** That carries its tool calls and reasoning context into the next request.
* **Cap the loop.** Some models keep refining their searches. On the last call, disable tools and add a message telling the model to answer. With `tool_choice: "none"` alone, DeepSeek returns an empty message.
* **Return errors to the model.** Failed or timed-out searches and malformed tool arguments go back as an `{"error": ...}` tool result, so the model can retry or say it couldn't search instead of the program crashing.
* **Use `domain_type: "news"`** for recent events, and `research_paper` for academic papers.
* **Treat results as untrusted.** Search snippets are third-party content and can contain prompt injection. The system prompt tells the model never to follow instructions found in them.
* **Collect source URLs in your code** if you need a guaranteed source list. Inline links are a prompt convention.
## Costs
You pay Fireworks per token. TinyFish Search is free up to 12,000 requests per day. Beyond that, requests need a positive wallet balance.
